Board amends district policies

Three amended policies dealing with cell phones, relationships with public agencies and grading were adopted Monday night by the Suttons Bay Board of Education.

Board members voted to adopt the policies as recommended by Michael Murray, the district’s superintendent. He adjusted the policies with guidance from NEOLA, a company that provides districts with templates.

The most recognized policy deals with electronic devices. Previous policies dealt strictly with the use of cell phones at the school. The new policy also addresses the use of iPods and flash drives. Cellular phones must be off during the school day, but may be used after hours as long it they don’t cause any distractions.

The new policy allows students to use iPods on bus trips, a previously unacceptable practice, as long as it is not disruptive or interferes with activities, Murray said.

Also adopted was a new policy outlining how law enforcement officers may interview students regarding allegations of abuse and neglect, and the conditions under which they may talk with students regarding illegal activities off campus.

The policy, identified by the company with the heading “interrogation of students,” was changed to “relationships with public agencies.”

“We don’t do water boarding here,” Murray joked about the harsh-sounding title.

When allegations of abuse and neglect are investigated, students may be interviewed by law enforcement officers at school. Any other contacts by law enforcement agencies are to be made outside normal school hours.
