A new art teacher was hired and a date to begin the superintendent's evaluation set Monday night by the Glen Lake Board of Education.
Jill Walker of Traverse City was hired to replace Gretchen Siebers, who left the school after the beginning of the school year. She moved from the area.
Walker completed her student teaching at Traverse City East Junior High School and has been a longtime substitute in the Traverse City Area Public Schools. She holds a master’s of education degree in curriculum and instruction and is “highly qualified” to teach art to grades K-12.
In other personnel business this week, the board agreed to begin the evaluation process with Superintendent Joan Groening on Jan. 22. The process includes dialogue between board members and Groening as to how they feel she has worked to achieve established school district goals.
The board also:
• Accepted a low bid of $5,400, as recommended by buildings and grounds superintendent Joe Hobbins, to repaint the junior/senior hallway over the holiday break. A letter will be sent to parents and students informing them that all belongings must be removed from the lockers before leaving for Christmas vacation Dec. 21.
• Approved change orders totaling $6,000 for the first phase of work on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning project at the school bringing the cost of this phase to just over $200,000. Both the painting and HVAC projects are being supported through the district’s sinking fund.
• Approved a 25-cent increase in the cost of adult lunches, bringing the total charge to $3. The charges for elementary and high school lunches will remain at $1.75 and $2, respectively, for at least the remainder of the school year, Groening said.
