Charges are being sought for a Royal Oak man for negligent homicide following an Oct. 13 automobile accident in Elmwood Township in which a woman died two weeks later from her injuries.
The man was eastbound on Hoxie Road when he ran through a stop sign at the Bugai Road intersection and broadsided a car driven by Thomas L. Siefke, 59, of Martin, Ohio, police reports said. Siefke had two passengers in his car, Claribel Snyder, 91, and Shirley Baker, both of Traverse City. Snyder died as a result of her injuries from the accident on Oct. 27, and both Baker and Siefke were treated and released from Munson Medical Center.
The Royal Oak man is scheduled to be arraigned in 86th District Court on the charge on Friday. If he is found guilty of the high court misdemeanor, he faces a maximum penalty of up to two years in jail and or $2,000, plus reimbursing the government for emergency response costs and expense of prosecuting.
County Prosecutor Joseph T. Hubbell said after reviewing the accident scene report prepared by sheriff’s deputies, the negligent homicide charge to be filed by assistant prosecutor Doug Donaldson was the only option.
“There were no aggravating circumstances. Alcohol was not a factor. The death was caused by this person’s driving,” Hubbell said.
