The Lakers improved to 3-3 in the Northwest Conference with a win at Leland Friday night, 54-42. Glen Lake coach Pete Woessner said the Lakers had a good Christmas break, and a scrimmage with St. Francis early last week helped get them ready to come back.

“We shot really well at Leland, which was good because he had big-time trouble containing Erin Sneed,” Woessner said.

The Lakers led at halftime, 35-24, and put the game away he third quarter, outscoring the Comets 19-2. “We shot over 40 percent for the game. That is good for us, we’ve been averaging somewhere in the mid-20s for shooting this season,” he said.

Leland coach Jon Kiessel said Leland started strong then Glen Lake dominated on defense for the second and third quarters. “We did a good job against their press to start. But they were able to move the ball on the perimeter and get it into Kaelyn Thayer. She really hurt us on the inside,” Kiessel said.

Kaelyn Thayer made 9-for-12 shots for 18 points to lead Glen Lake. Amanda Lautner had 10 points, Paige Stachnik 11 points, and Amanda Brown had 9 points. For Leland, Sneed had 21 points and Ellen Duperon had 10.

St. Mary beat Northport, 75-14. Northport coach Gary Longcore said St. Mary’s speed and ball handling skills were too much for Northport. “I believe they really are one of the best Class D teams in northern lower Michigan,” he said.

Eagles’ coach Paula Korson said they used their fast break ability to their advantage. “We wanted to get out on top and keep the pressure up on defense and we did that,” she said.

Christy Miller scored 18 points to lead St. Mary with Alyssa Korson netting 16 and Susan Herman 14 points each. Coach Korson said the longest shot of the night Tuesday as a three-point shot from just past the half-court mark by Wildcat Shauna Sitarek. “She just launched it and it went in at the buzzer. That was really neat to see,” she said.

For Northport, Emily Stowe had 4 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 blocks. Octavia Buss had 4 points, Carloyn Gorenflo had 5 points, Sitarek had 8 rebounds, and Betsy Shiner had 6 rebounds.

Suttons Bay lost at Frankfort Friday 68-31. Arianna Guillen had 11 points, 8 steals and 5 rebounds to lead the Norse. Biri Luna had 7 points and Emily Send had 8 points, 8 rebounds.

Glen Lake hosted Kingsley last night, will host St. Marys tonight and will play at Mesick on Saturday. Leland will play at Mesick tonight, will host Suttons Bay on Saturday, and will play at St. Marys on Tuesday. Suttons Bay hosted Benzie last night, and will host Elk Rapids on Tuesday. Northport will play at Grand Traverse Academy tomorrow night and will host T-C Christian on Monday.
