Cormorant seminar set Jan. 15 at ISEA

The Inland Seas Education Association will present a seminar that focuses on double crested cormorants at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay.

The program, “Cormorant Management in Northern Michigan,” will be presented by Nate Winkler.

Double crested cormorants are currently found in record high numbers in northern Lake Michigan. Winkler will present information regarding the decline and subsequent resurgence in numbers of double crested cormorants across the Great Lakes basin. He will describe the subsequent effect of large numbers of cormorants on the commercial fishery in northern Lake Michigan and discuss management activities by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) and partner agencies.

Winkler is a fish biologist with the GTB’s biological services department. A fourth generation and lifelong resident of the region, Winkler has worked for the GTB for five years. After graduating with a B.S. degree in fisheries and wildlife from Lake Superior State University, he became the GTB’s water quality specialist, dealing primarily with surface water issues. Currently, Winkler is studying double crested cormorants and their effect on the commercial fishery of Lake Michigan.

The Inland Seas Education Association is a non-profit organization based in Suttons Bay, dedicated to science education on the Great Lakes aboard its “schoolship” or in its education center. For more information, contact ISEA at 271-3077 or visit www.schoolship.org online.
