High school principal proposes expanded elective courses at G-L

An expanded group of high school elective courses proposed for Glen Lake High School was discussed this week by the district Board of Education.

Secondary Principal Kevin Kelly Monday night described for board members an expanded list of classes proposed for the upcoming school year.

“We need to increase our number of electives to match our courses which have gone from seven to eight,” Kelly said.

New courses that could be offered as early as the 2008-09 school year include Advanced Placement environmental science, and business mathematics. Kelly also proposed to separate the existing biology course offered to freshmen into two sections: one for college-bound students, the other for those without plans for college. All of the courses would be offered for two semesters.

Single-semester courses could be added to include zoology, forensic science, poetry, personal fitness and outdoor recreation.

“Both personal fitness and outdoor are physical education courses. In personal fitness students set goals and work with an instructor to reach theses goals,” Kelly said.

“Given where we are located, the outdoor recreation course is a no-brainer.”

Kelly said the proposal to add electives is “budget-neutral.”

No action was taken, per board policy. However, school board members could act to add the courses at their next regular meeting scheduled for Feb. 11.

In other business during the regular monthly meeting, board members:

• Rescheduled their date for the superintendent’s evaluation to Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. in the superintendent’s office.

• Approved an overnight stay in Auburn HJills for the boys’ and girl’s basketball teams that are playing at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Jan. 25.

• Approved the fourth graders’ trip to Lansing scheduled for May 15-16.

• Set the date for the annual school election for May 6.

• Approved the 6th grade outdoor camping trip to the Leelanau Outdoor Center scheduled for Jan. 30 through Feb. 1.
