Leelanau County’s Board of Commissioners learned Tuesday that the owner of a private dam at Leland “does not have the resources” to repair the structure and thus will be faced with “removing” it when directed to do so by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

A movement toward annexation of portion of Elmwood Township to Traverse City took new turns this week, but the question remained unsolved.

A petition drive to place a state-wide tax limitation proposal on the November general election ballot was started this week in parts of Leelanau County, with a county-wide campaign being planned.

January 15, 1953

The board of supervisors was considering strongly a hike in property valuations to cover the county’s rising deficit. Supervisor Elmer Billmon of Solon, finance chairman, recommended a straight 20 percent increase, which would raise total valuations to $11,887,572, but still about $3 million less than the state recommends.

Harry Lautner of Elmwood last week was named chairman of the Leelanau County Road Commission, succeeding Howard Burfiend of Maple City Route 2, who had held the post 10 years. Mr. Burfiend had been succeeded on the board by Martin Egeler of Glen Arbor.

Fire whipped by a strong northwest wind early Sunday afternoon completely destroyed the cottage-office just south of Glen Lake Narrows of Dr. G. W. Behan. Fast, efficient action of volunteer firemen saved the Grant Johnston house just 10 feet away, and other nearby residences.

Logs are being moved quite freely into the mill yards at Lime Lake.

J. Kline and son have butchered two fat steers, and sold them at the Northern Michigan Asylum at Traverse City.

One representative will be allowed per 100 democratic votes for governor at a Democratic Congressional Convention in Marquette City. Leelanau County can send 5, Manitou 1, Grand Traverse 6, Marquette 16, Houghton 18 and Menominee 21.
