Separate car accidents over the weekend sent a total of five people to the hospital, with one person listed in critical condition and a second in fair condition.
Evan Baatz, 18, of Interlochen remained in critical condition Tuesday after a two-car accident in Elmwood Township Friday night sent four people to the hospital. According to an accident report from county sheriff’s deputies, Baatz was driving on County Road 641 just east of Watkoski Road at 8:15 p.m. Friday when he lost control of his vehicle. The rear end of the vehicle skidded across the center line and struck a west-bound vehicle driven by John A. Streichert, 73, of Elmwood Township, the report states. Also in Streichert’s vehicle were his wife, Dorothy R. Streichert, 72, of Elmwood Township, and Sharon L. Baswell, 71, of Solon Township.
Baatz and his passenger, April L. Marsh, 16, of Elmwood Township, received incapacitating injuries and were transported to Munson Medical Center. Marsh was treated, and released on Saturday. John Streichert and Baswell were also treated and released.
On Saturday at 4:33 p.m., Roxanna M. Polhamus, 43, of Lake Leelanau was traveling north on M-22 near Arrowhead Trail in Suttons Bay Township when she saw a vehicle on the shoulder of the road, a sheriff’s department report said. Polhamus told deputies that she stepped on the brakes to slow down since there were people standing in the shoulder, then lost control and slid sideways off the road into the vehicle. Polhamus was transported to Munson, where she was listed in fair condition as of Tuesday afternoon. The driver of the vehicle on the M-22 shoulder, Casey M. Schneider-Myzell, 25, of Ann Arbor, and other people standing off the road were not injured. Polhamus was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
Both accidents occurred in blowing snow conditions.
