Saving Birds Thru Habitat (SBTH) of Omena has received a $5,000 donation from Fairmount Minerals, Inc.
Gina Erb, vice president of SBTH, said the donation was earmarked for the group’s endowment fund with the promise of another $5,000 in December this year. She said the contribution was made because of Fairmount’s appreciation for the guidance that SBTH has provided regarding environmental restoration on the company’s various industrial sites, Erb said.
“It testifies to the great success SBTH has had in reaching beyond the traditional conservation community with efforts to educate others about how to protect, enhance and restore habitat for North America’s birds,” she said.
SBTH established an endowment fund a little more than a year ago, electing to place it with the Leelanau Township Community Foundation (LTCF). LTCF was chosen in part because it provided two significant grants for the Habitat
Discovery Center. Also, donations made to the fund through the foundation offered every donor a tax advantage. Michigan residents who contribute to the fund receive a 50 percent tax credit for donations up to $200.
