Even with a 65-16 lead by halftime, the clock was not a friend to Leland in its game Tuesday with Traverse City Christian - or at least the Comets' hopes of breaking the 100-point barrier.
But one scoring record was broken in Leland’s 85-29 blowout over the Sabres, as senior Marcus Whittaker poured in 49 points to claim the new school single game scoring record.
The game was played with a “running clock” for the entire second half because Leland held a lead of more than 40 points.
“He was hot all night,” said Leland coach Jason Stowe of Whittaker’s performance. “He had 21 midway through the second quarter. It was just one of those nights for him.”
Whittaker was efficient while playing about three-fourths of the game. He hit 21-of-30 from the field, did not attempt a 3-point shot and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Whittaker had not previously scored more than 30 points, but broke his personal best in a big way. He also had four thunderous dunks.
“It wasn’t like we were trying to get the ball to him, to feed him the ball time after time. He worked hard, and was the recipient of baskets after a lot of our steals,” said Stowe. Whittaker also had 11 rebounds.
Credit Jordan Gibson with recognizing what was happening, and dishing out 10 assists. Eric Larsen scored 10 points.
The previous Leland scoring record of 47 points was held by Justin Paulton, and Stowe was also coaching at the time — but for another squad.
“I do know when it was, the year was 1999, and it was against my Northport team,” said Stowe.
