Government offices and financial institutions will be closed Monday to observe Presidents Day.
Most of the county’s public and private schools will be also closed in observance of the federal government holiday. The Leelanau School will be on a mid-winter break Feb. 16-24.
The county courthouse will be closed, as will most county offices, on Monday. Most state government offices, including all Secretary of State branches, will be closed as well. Post offices and federal government offices will also be closed.
Prior to Presidents Day becoming law in 1968, the federal government observed President George Washington’s birthday, Feb. 22, as an official holiday. Many states also observed President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12, as a holiday.
While Presidents Day was originally intended to be the official observance of Washington’s birthday, it also honors Lincoln and all U.S. presidents.
