3-point barrage gives Eagles crown

St. Mary secured the Cherryland Conference title in girls' basketball with a 73-55 win over Traverse City Christian Tuesday following a long-range shooting exhibition.

The Eagles are 4-0 in the conference, 14-5 overall. Christian took second with a 2-2 conference record and Northport finished third at 0-4.

The Sabres took the lead in the opening stanza, 14-11. The Eagles dominated for the rest of the game with scores of 32-20 and 51-35 at the quarter breaks.

“We set a new school record in three-point shots in a game. We hit 11 three-pointers against Christian. The old record was eight set in 2006,” said coach Paula Korson. Senior Alyssa Korson has returned to early-season form as she scored 24 points to lead St. Mary. Christy Miller scored 10 points with Susan Herman and Allison Korson both netting 9 points for the Eagles.

St. Mary didn’t fare as well at Manistee Catholic Central on Thursday, with the host Sabers winning, 65-50. After falling behind 11-8 to Catholic, St. Mary took a 29-26 lead into halftime. The Sabers regained the lead when St. Mary mustered only four points in the third quarter, and held off the Eagles to win.

“It’s hard to win games when you only score four points in a quarter,” coach Korson said.

Alyssa Korson scored 16 points, Miller and Herman had 8 points apiece, and Allison Korson netted 7 for the Eagles.

Northport hosted Leland on Monday in a make-up game from earlier this season with the Comets winning, 48-29. Leland maintained a lead throughout the game with scores of 15-11, 26-23, and 41-23 at the quarter breaks.

“We really came on in the second quarter and got it to within three at half time. Then, we came out in the third and couldn’t hit a basket to save our lives,” Wildcat coach Gary Longcore said.

“I think Northport has really improved this season and they gave us all we could handle in the second quarter,” said Leland coach Jon Kiessel.

Longcore said that overall he was pleased with his team’s effort against Leland. “We played our zone defense very well and moved the ball up and down the court,” he said.

Emily Stowe had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals to lead Northport. Betsy Shiner added 5 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals; Shauna Sitarek had 6 points and 7 rebounds; and Kristina Leabo had 4 points and 7 rebounds.

For Leland, Erin Sneed had 24 points and Erica Breen added 15. Ellen Duperon grabbed 14 rebounds.

On Wednesday, Northport lost at Buckley, 58-7.

Northport traveled to Bear Lake last night and will close the regular season tonight at home against Alba. St. Mary will host the T-C Bulldogs tonight.
