The Leland girls' basketball team evened its record against Glen Lake this season to 1-1 after winning on the Lakers' home court Tuesday, 47-41.
The win puts the Comets at 4-9 in the Northwest Conference, 7-11 overall. Glen Lake is now 8-11 overall, 7-6 in the conference.
Lakers coach Pete Woessner said he knew the second meeting between the two storied programs would not be like the first one this season, when Glen Lake won 59-42.
“Our goal was to slow down Erin Sneed. We accomplished that until the fourth quarter. Sneed scored 11 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth,” he said.
The Comets held a 12-11 advantage after the first quarter, with the Lakers tying the game at halftime, 20-20. Glen Lake outscored Leland 17-10 in the third to take a 37-30 lead into the fourth.
“We had an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but were only able to convert 4 for 9 from the free throw line and didn’t score a field goal going down the stretch,” Woessner said.
“Glen Lake has been playing so well, I knew it would be challenge playing them at their place. But, we found a way,” Leland coach Jon Kiessel said. “Melissa Loredo did a good job for us against (Glen Lake’s) Kaelyn Thayer in the fourth quarter. She really helped neutralize Thayer, who is a real threat under the basket,” he said.
Erica Breen also played a big role for Leland inside by snaring 11 rebounds. For Glen Lake, Paige Stachnik had 14 points and Thayer added 13 points and 9 rebounds.
On Saturday, Leland hosted Kingsley and lost 71-35. Kiessel said while the scored was lopsided, he was very pleased that Sneed was able to reach the 1,000 career point mark at home before a packed gym.
“I know we lost the game, but when Erin hit that shot to reach 1,000, you would’ve thought we won the game the way the crowd was cheering. It was really nice to have everyone there to recognize what a great player she is,” coach Kiessel said.
Sneed scored 14 points and Breen netted 13 to pace the Comet attack.
Leland beat Traverse City Christian, 58-49, Thursday and Kiessel said he was very happy with how the Comets won. “We out rebounded them, 34 to 20, which is a huge feat for us,” he said. Leland took a 19-7 lead after one quarter, then the Sabres rallied to take a 27-25 halftime lead and held a 49-38 edge at the end of three.
Sneed scored 20 points for the Comets, going 7-for-7 at the charity stripe. Breen had 17 points, and Duperon had 8 points and 8 rebounds. “Ellen played a huge defensive game for us,” Kiessel said.
Glen Lake pushed Frankfort to the brink on Saturday before the Panthers pulled out a win, 40-31. “We played great defense against Frankfort, but struggled scoring,” Lakers coach Woessner said. The Panthers had a 6-3 lead after one quarter, but Glen Lake had an 14-11 halftime advantage. A 17-6 scoring effort by the Panthers put them ahead for good 28-20 at the end of three.
Amanda Lautner scored 11 points and Stachnik netted 9 for Glen Lake.
Frankfort was not so nice at Suttons Bay Tuesday night, beating the host Norsemen 55-24. “Frankfort plays great defense. They get in your face and don’t let you get any easy points,” Norse coach Fred Wille said.
At halftime, the Panthers led 28-10. Biri Luna scored 11 points for Suttons Bay.
At Mesick on Saturday, Suttons Bay made it another close one before the Bulldogs won, 46-40. The Norsemen had a 13-9 lead after the first quarter, but Mesick took the lead for good, 19-17, at the half.
Wille said Luna suffered a nasty cut on her cheek early in the first quarter and had to sit down. “We brought her back in the fourth, but we couldn’t pull out the win,” he said.
Luna scored 20 points to lead Suttons Bay. Beatrice Shananquet had 9 points and 9 rebounds, and Arianna Guillen had 8 points, 8 steals and 8 assists. Leland will wrap up the regular season at home against Mesick tonight. Suttons Bay will play at Benzie and Glen Lake will play at Kingsley tonight as well.
