Several from county complete in Vasa

More than a dozen county residents competed in the 32nd annual North American Vasa Saturday near Traverse City.

Marnie Sutter of Cedar was the top skier in her age group and second overall among female racers in the 50K classic race. Her husband, Tom Sutter, placed 13th overall and first among male racers 60 and older in the 27K freestyle. The Sutters were featured in an article that appeared in the Enterprise last week.

Two county women were also tops in their age groups in the 27K freestyle race. Margot McGlothlin of Bingham Township was first in the 20 to 24 age bracket in 1:48.49. Karen Kirt of Lake Leelanau, a teacher at Leland Public School, was first in the 40 to 44 age group in 1:57.14.

Other Leelanau competitors in the 27K freestyle were Dale Boone of Suttons Bay (15th in the 45 to 49 age group), Dennis Alleva of Northport (seventh, 50 to 54), Jim McGlothlin of Bingham Township (11th, 50 to 54), and Dan White of Leland (13th, 50 to 54). Phil Anderson of Suttons Bay also placed in the 55 to 59 age group in the 27K.

In the classic 27K race, Randy Woods of Lake Leelanau finished second in his age group (50 to 59).

Hannah Richard of Elmwood Township, among the youngest competing, was the top skier in the 1-14 age group in the 12K freestyle.

In the 50k freestyle, Mark Finstad of Empire participated in the 50 to 54 age group, and Duane Amato of Suttons Bay and Kevin Kelly of Empire raced in the 55 to 59 age group.
