1916-2008
Funeral services were held Wednesday in Traverse City for Rachel Catherine (Antoine) Pamame of Peshawbestown who died Feb. 9 at Munson Medical Center. She was 91.
She was born on Sept. 3, 1916, in Northport, to George Antoine and Elsie Fisher. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Wabindato, and her second husband, Jonas Pamame.
Growing up, she was fluent in her native language. She and her siblings attended Mt. Pleasant Indian School. She and her family resided in Custer, Manistee and Holland before she returned to Leelanau County. A member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, she enjoyed reading her Bible, singing gospel songs, going to pow-wows and shopping at thrift stores.
She is survived by her two sons, Eugene Wabindato of Branch and Chester
Pamame of Peshawbestown; one daughter, Janice (Pamame) Case of Traverse City; a sister, Lorraine Antoine of Canada; 17 grandchildren; plus many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Leonard, Luscious, Irving and Cletus; sister, Violet; and daughter, Betty Mae Pamame.
