County's top spellers to compete at bee

Nearly 50 students from six schools will vie for the title of the top speller in Leelanau County at the annual spelling bee, which will be held Tuesday night at Northport School.

The bee is sponsored by the Leelanau Enterprise and is being coordinated by Erin Connolly, a recent college graduate and a Northport alumnus.
Representing their respective schools (arranged by alphabetical order) are:

• Glen Lake — Molly Flerlage, Skylar Gleason, Corrine Gretzmacher, Jordan Hill, Anders Johnson, Patrick Kenwabikise, Pete Kerby-Miller, Hallie Lillie and Mark Malocha.

• St. Mary — Rachel Amalfitano, Ashley Grant, Colin Platts, Megan Popp, Mary Rexroat and Shayna Sumner. (Bailey Davis and Sam Holmes, alternates)

• Leland — Guy Beardslee, Brennan Deckrow, Ian Duvall , J.R. Duvall, Kati Kattelus, Ben Mothershead, Hanna Schaub, Constanza Snyder and Elizabeth Vana.

• Northport — Ty Luna, Dustin Machir, Elena Mosher, Fiona Muller, Monni Raphael and Chelsie Wack. (Autumn Huck, alternate)

Names of contestants were not provided by Pathfinder School or Suttons Bay School by press time this week.

Kathy Wessell, wife of Northport superintendent Ty Wessell, is the scheduled pronouncer for the evening, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Northport Community Arts Center. Students are asked to be at the school by 5:30 p.m. to register. The panel of judges includes Eric Carlson of the Enterprise, second grade teacher Jill Walker, and a Northport Honor Society student.

All spellers will receive a certificate of participation signed by Enterprise publisher Alan Campbell. The top eight spellers as determined by the contest will also receive a pair of tickets to the Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay along with a certificate for popcorn and drinks. As the top spellers in the county they will advance to represent the peninsula in the regional spelling bee next month in Traverse City.
