"Funday Sunday" at the Great Lakes Children's Museum will feature an
exploration of Japanese arts and culture with local educator Karen Kirt.
“Sensei (teacher) Karen” will show children this Sunday how to write their names using Japanese calligraphy, fold origami, practice manga (Japanese cartooning), and use chopsticks during a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
Kirt, a native of Lake Leelanau, earned a master of arts degree from the University of Montana and spent six years living in Japan while teaching at an international school and studying at a Japanese university. Kirt currently teaches special classes on Japan and is an elementary school teacher at Leland Public School.
Funday Sunday activities are appropriate for children 3 and up, though children under 6 will need an adult to help complete their project. Funday Sundays are supported by a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, and by the Dennos Museum Center.
The activities are free with admission to the museum.
