3 skiers qualify for state meet

Three members of the Glen Lake cooperative ski team qualified for state competition with their performance at the Regionals last week.

Shannon McGovern, Sarah Wiesen and Jack Kerby-Miller will travel to Boyne Mountain Monday for the state Class B, C, D meet.

McGovern, a Suttons Bay freshman, won the slalom and was third in the giant slalom (GS) in the Valentine’s Day Regional meet. Her combined time of 49.45 seconds was more than three-quarters of a second faster than the second-place racer, Katie Bramble of Manistee.

"Katie had the fastest time after the first round," Laker coach Mark Fisher said. "Shannon read the course better on the second run and executed."

The Regional competition included skiers from 11 other schools, including Traverse City St. Francis, Manistee, Grayling, Cadillac, Clare, Benzie Central, Mount Pleasant, Elk Rapids, Bellaire, Harbor Springs and Onekama.

McGovern, who was clocked in 42:11, trailed only Manistee’s Bramble (40.74) and Kari Paine (41.22) in the GS. Wiesen, a senior, qualified for the state meet in GS after turning in a combined time of 44.77.

McGovern will compete in both the slalom and GS in the state meet.

Fisher said the skiers "did a great job racing in snowy conditions" at the Regionals. "It snowed all day," he said.

As a team, the Laker girls finished fifth with 191.5 points.

Other Laker skiers who posted top-50 finishes in the slalom included (tied for 21st), Abby Branson (36th), Molly Branson (40th) and Macy Henry (52nd). Top finishes in the GS also included Molly Branson (36th), Abby Branson (43rd) and Henry (47th).

The Glen Lake boys’ team placed fourth overall, narrowly missing qualifying for state competition by 10 1/2 points. Manistee’s boys team captured the Regional title, with Harbor Springs second and Cadillac third.

"It was a wrong move by one skier that cost just one millisecond. It was that close," Fisher said.

Kerby-Miller was the top Laker skier in the slalom, finishing fourth with a time of 47.51 after two runs. He will compete in the event at the state meet Monday.

Seniors Eric Henry (13th in slalom, tied for 25th in GS) and Kody Herman (19th in slalom, 30th in GS) concluded their prep ski careers. Another bright spot for the Lakers was the performance of freshman Peter Rennie, who was 18th in the GS and 25th in slalom.
