Elmwood begins interviews for new zoning/planning post

Interviews are under way to fill a new "zoning administrator/planning coordinator" position created by the Elmwood Township Board, according to a report given at the Feb. 12 Elmwood Township Board meeting.

Four applicants were interviewed on Feb. 12 by the township personnel committee, with township attorney Jim Young also in attendance. Supervisor Derith Smith conducted phone interviews with most applicants while paring down the number to be interviewed to six.

Among those to interview was current Elmwood community planner Bill Swanson, whose position is being eliminated in favor of the two-pronged "zoning administrator/planning coordinator" position. Former zoning administrator Donald Watkowski resigned in the fall. His position is not being filled in hopes of combining the two positions as a cost-cutting move.

In other business at the one hour, 20-minute meeting, the board:

• Approved by split votes — clerk Connie Preston was opposed in both decisions — resolutions continuing a process to create a special assessment district of owners in the Timberlee area to pay for maintenance of their private roads.

• Agreed to pay the township harbormaster by the hour when working in the off-season. An hourly rate of $14.60 was suggested; the board set the pay as equal to the amount paid the salaried harbormaster during the boating season based on a 40-hour work week.

• Voted not to partner with the Sun Perch Condominium complex in building a new sanitary sewer system. The present system is failing, and needs to be replaced, engineer James J. Minster told the township board. Minster was representing the condo owners.

A new system for the 31-unit complex will cost about $100,000 to build, and each owner will likely be required to pay an additional $20 per month to cover maintenance costs, Minster said.
