Boys' girls' hoops tourney schedule gets extra-busy.

In past years, the road to Lansing in the Michigan high school boys’ basketball tournament has offered few chances for rest. That’s not the case in 2008, when a shift in the girls’ season to winter has required the mingling of two tournaments.

Consequently, the Regional round of the boys’ tournament will be held Monday and Wednesday next week — with a six-day layoff until the quarterfinal match. Historically, Regional games were played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For the winner of the Northport boys’ district on Friday, the change allows for only three days before starting Regional play. Should the District champ be Leland, as expected, the Comets will need to win five games in nine days to take the Regional trophy.

Ditto for the Class C winner out of Traverse City St. Francis, where the host squad and Charlevoix are heavy favorites.

Glen Lake sophomore Krissy Bush was the school’s top competitor in the Regional bowling tournament Saturday in Traverse City.

Bush at one time was in 10th place, which would have earned a trip to the state finals. However, she ended up 19th after the sixth and final game.
Senior Joey Galla was top bowler for Glen Lake in 27th place.

In team competition, the boys’ team finished 9th while the girls’ squad was 11th.

Co-captains Aric Browning of Omena and Alex Voigt of Northport took their mostly all-Leelanau County co-ed indoor soccer team to the finals in the Northwestern Michigan College intramural league before falling, 10-6. Other team members were Daisy Dalzell, Lauren Donaghy, Mike Morrison and Andrew Ness, all of Suttons Bay; Matt Lichty from Leland; and Marcus Martin from Traverse City.

Donaghy was the only female present for the finals, so she had to play the entire game.

Browning, Voigt, Dalzell, and Lichty also played on the NMC intramural teams that were the champions in dodge ball and football earlier in the year. Basketball season is next in the NMC intramural schedule.

It was like the “good old days” at Glen Lake, when basketball reigned as king, at the Lakers final home game of the season. Glen Lake edged Suttons Bay last Thursday before the biggest — and loudest — crowd in several seasons in the Laker gym.
