Embezzlement figure from G-T receives jail sentence

A Grand Traverse County woman will serve two months in the county jail after being sentenced for attempted embezzlement of over $1,000 Monday.

Laura A. McAlpine, 50, of 4312 Bridlewood Dr., Traverse City, was sentenced in the 13th Circuit Court by Judge Philip E. Rodgers on the charge. McAlpine was ordered to serve two months in jail with credit for one day served; pay $60 state crime victims fund; $50 local crime victims fund; $800 costs; $100 fine; $10,000 additional restitution; $60 felony state costs; and placed on two years probation.

According to court documents, between 2000 and 2003 McAlpine wrote checks to herself from a Solon Township business, Distinctive Windows and Doors, totaling over $40,000.

She was originally charged with embezzlement over $20,000, a felony with a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison. County Prosecutor Joseph T. Hubbell agreed to drop the original charge if McAlpine agreed to plead guilty to the attempted embezzlement charge.
