A Royal Oak man pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge of negligent homicide during a Circuit Court arraignment conducted as part of 86th District Court proceedings.
Robert J. Nadai, 56, of 401 N. West St., Royal Oak, appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on the high court misdemeanor charge. Nadai waived the hearing and was bound over to the 13th Circuit Court. He pleaded not guilty and his $10,000 personal recognizance bond was continued. No date was set for when Nadai would next appear in court.
According to court documents, Nadai was traveling east on Hoxie Road in Elmwood Township on Oct. 13 when he failed to stop at the intersection with Bugai Road. He allegedly struck broadside a vehicle driven by Thomas L. Siefke, 59, of Martin, Ohio, who was traveling north on Bugai Road at the time.
As a result of injuries she sustained in the accident, Claribel Snyder, 91, of Traverse City, died on Oct. 27. Also riding in the Siefke’s vehicle at the time of the accident were Alice Campeau, 73, of Traverse City, who was taken to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City with serious injuries; Lola Siefke, 61; and Shirley A. Baker, 64. Campeau was injured after she was thrown from the vehicle during the collision, and pinned under the car.
Neither Nadai nor his wife, Kathleen, 59, required medical care.
If found guilty of the negligent homicide charge, Nadai would face a maximum penalty of up to two years in jail and or a $2,000 fine, plus reimbursing the government for emergency response costs and expense of prosecution.
