Quilt found that honors team - but who made it?

A quilt commemorating the success of the 1950 St. Mary basketball has surfaced after years in storage.

Jerome Korson, Robert (Rip) Schaub and Rosemary
(O’Brien) Schaub.

St. Mary parent Julie (Gallagher) Thon gave the quilt to the school this year. It was passed to her from Margaret (Gallagher) Sophiea Bufka, whose late husband Robert was a member of the 1952 Eagles team.

“The question is … who made the quilt?” St. Mary development director Jean LaCross said.

The quilt bears the names of members of the Regional championship team, including Jerome Korson, Robert (Rip) Schaub, Richard (Dick) Couturier, Bob Flees, Marvin Schaub, Richard Schaub, Dave Korson and coach Elden Dame of Northport. The team won the District tournament by defeating Honor and Mackinaw City, and the Regional crown by topping Onekama. St. Mary lost to Brimley in the quarterfinals.

The quilt will likely be displayed with other Eagle athletic trophies.

Anyone with information about the creator of the quilt is asked to contact Rip Schaub at 256-7289 or Jerome Korson at 271-3577.
