Man arraigned on 2 sex charges

A Traverse City man is free on bond after being arraigned on two counts of criminal sexual conduct for an offense that allegedly occurred in Solon Township last fall.

Francis M. May, 19, of 837 Washington St., Traverse City was arraigned in the 86th District Court Friday before Judge John D. Foresman on two counts of third degree criminal sexual conduct with a person 13-15 years old. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 14 at 11:15 a.m., and May’s bond of 10 percent of $10,000 was continued.

According to court documents, county Sheriff’s Department detective Clint Kerr went to Traverse City West High School Jan. 15 to investigate a criminal sexual conduct complaint that allegedly occurred in the county. Kerr talked with 13-year-old and 15-year-old girls, and both stated that in November 2007 the younger girl was at the older girl’s Solon Township house at the same time the defendant was present. Both girls also told Kerr that while they were sleeping in separate bedrooms, May entered each room. Both girls said the suspect removed her clothes and had non-consensual sex. When Kerr interviewed May on Jan. 31, he waived the reading of his Miranda rights warning and allegedly admitted to committing the acts.

If May is found guilty on either of the felony charges, he faces a maximum penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
