Questioning the effectiveness and enforcement methods of the Traverse Narcotics Team (TNT) drug-enforcement operation, the county prosecutor Tuesday recommended that Leelanau withdraw from the regional squad to increase the number of county police officers.

Told that “stoplogs” that control the level of 18-mile-long Lake Leelanau at a Leland dam were going to be removed as quickly as possible, the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday night to seek a court injunction to prevent the removal of the logs, and take “all steps necessary” for rapid construction of a temporary dam to maintain the level of the lake.

The Glen Lake school district will receive about $156,400 of a total of
$222,700 in reimbursement funds from the State of Michigan to units of government in Leelanau County for local tax dollars lost through absorption of properties by the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Admission of Hawaii as the 49th state, included in the program of the Eisenhower administration, would mean a tremendous “boom” for the Boyne Manufacturing Company of Northport, one of the few flag-making companies in Michigan.

Pupils at Northport school are rightfully proud of the 25 big sacks of used clothing and shoes they have collected for needy children of the world, particularly Korea.

Light voting is expected Monday in annual village elections at Suttons Bay and Empire, but a large vote is anticipated at Northport, where citizens will decide whether to permit sale of liquor by the glass within the village limits.

A little boy who was just 6 years old died at Omena last Saturday of pneumonia.
