An administrative law hearing concerning Northport Public School's implementation of a special education plan for the child of school board member Alan Woods continues this week and into next.
At the Northport Board of Education meeting Monday, superintendent Tyrus Wessell said he would be out of the office Thursday through Saturday and most of next week while the hearing continues in Traverse City. He said he was hopeful testimony would come to an end next week so the state administrative law judge can begin her review of the case, and make a ruling.
Woods and his wife, Patti, brought the complaint about their son’s education plan for his special needs on Aug. 31, 2007. The complaint covers the last three school years and involves dozens of witnesses and their testimony. Wessell estimated the cost to the district at over $200,000 if the judge rules against Northport.
Woods also said Monday he is hopeful for a resolution of the hearing sometime soon.
