Team that ousted Comets wins Class D hoops title.
Leland didn’t reach the finals of the Class D boys’ basketball tournament this year, but the Comets can take solace in knowing the team that knocked them out won a state championship.
Muskegon West Michigan Chrisitian, which eliminated Leland in the quarterfinals at Traverse City West March 11, 72-45, followed up the win over the Comets with a victory over previously undefeated Cedarville that gave them a spot in the championship game. The Warriors edged Detroit City, 58-57, on Saturday at the Breslin Center in East Lansing to win the state title.
Six-foot-6 center Charlie VanRees, who scored 24 points in the win over Leland, again paced Christian in the finals with 16 points.

It’s getting so you need a program just to tell which school is participating in which sport with which other school.
For instance, Northport no longer has its own baseball, softball or tennis teams, but co-ops with Suttons Bay to field baseball and softball teams. In addition, Wildcats may play on the Norsemen girls’ soccer squad and track team.
Also, for the first time Leland is co-oping with the Suttons Bay track squad.
Only one contest has been scheduled for spring sports in Leelanau County before after spring breaks. Suttons Bay will open its baseball season March 26 at Traverse City West. The Norsemen softball team won’t open until April 8 with Kalkaska.
