Man pleads guilty to sex charge

A 19-year-old Traverse City man pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual conduct in 13th Circuit Court Monday.

Francis M. May, 19, of 837 Washington St., Traverse City agree to plead guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct before Chief Judge Thomas G. Power Monday afternoon. In exchange for the guilty plea, county Prosecutor Joseph T. Hubbell agreed to drop two original charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person 13 to 15 years old. Sentencing is scheduled for April 7, and May is lodged in the county jail on a bond of $100,000 cash.

As part of his plea, May testified that in November 2007 while he was at a house in Solon Township visiting a friend he entered the bedroom of the friend’s younger sister. He removed her clothes and had non-consensual sexual intercourse with her. According to court documents, when May was interviewed by county Sheriff’s Department Detective Clint Kerr on Jan. 31, 2008 about the incident, he waived the reading of his Miranda rights and admitted to committing the act.

May faces a maximum penalty on the felony charge of up to 15 years in prison.
