MSU Extension to hold tractor safety course

The Michigan State University Extension will host a tractor safety training program for 14- and 15-year-olds on Tuesdays in April at the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station in Bingham Township.

The program is under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Hazardous Occupation order, and successful completion of a tractor operation and safety course is required for all youths under the age of 16 who perform farm jobs classified as hazardous.

Chris Garthe will serve as the instructor for the class, which requires attendance at all five sessions of the course (April 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 6 to 9 p.m.) as well as a test on Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This class will also cover safety on other types of small engines and farm tools. Growers and the MSU Extension will be assisting with the hands-on tractor safety training.

Cost of the program is $60, which is due at the time of registration, and scholarships are available. Registration deadline is Friday, March 21 and space is limited. The cost includes the course manual. Participants should dress to be outdoors.
