The Prospectors Club of Leelanau County is now accepting applications from high school seniors for college scholarships.
Applicants must be full-time residents of Leelanau County, but may attend any area high school. Recipients will be chosen following individual interviews in early May by a committee of county leaders who are not club members.
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, community involvement, resume presentation and personal interview, and financial need.
Applications are available at all high schools in Leelanau County, or by contacting Prospector John Kenney at 334-3000 or 256-9342. The deadline to apply is April 14.
In 2007, the club awarded three scholarships of $1,500 each. Receiving scholarships were Joseph A. Rexroat and Kelly A. Pendergast, both St. Mary graduates; and Anna Lau, a Leland graduate.
Winners will be announced at their respective high school awards ceremony, with checks presented at the Prospectors Club’s dinner meeting on June 26 at the Bluebird Restaurant.
The Leelanau Prospectors Club, which is nearly 63 years old, is comprised of some 60 men from throughout Leelanau County. They have been holding dinner meetings at various venues nearly every month since first gathering on April 4, 1945, at The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor.
