Permits up from '07, but lag from '06

Construction in Leelanau County appears to be rebounding from a strong downturn in 2007.

The number of building permits issued so far this year is up 23 percent from the same time in 2007; estimated construction values are up more than 16 percent.

In 2007, however, the number of permits issued by this time of year were down nearly 50 percent from the same time in 2006; and values were down 25-percent – therefore, the gains recorded so far in 2008 may not be particularly significant. In addition, this year’s construction season is still just getting under way.

Over the latest two week reporting period, the Leelanau County Construction Code Authority issued 12 new building permits, bringing the total number of permits issued so far this year to 48. The combined estimated construction value of the dozen new permits totaled $1,491,326, bringing the year-to-date estimated total value to $4,221,225.
