G-L girls open strong at CMU indoor meet

If the results from the first track meet of the season are any indication, the Glen Lake girls' track team should field another strong squad this spring.

Both the Laker girls’ and boys’ teams competed at the Division III and IV Indoor Co-Ed Invitational at Central Michigan University on March 26. Coach Paul Christiansen said athletes from 25 schools competed at the meet, with Glen Lake the smallest Division IV team.

“Out of the 25 teams there, 21 were Division III schools with only four Division IV schools. But, it was 70 degrees inside the dome with no wind or snow,” he said.

Team scores were not kept at the invitational. The top finish for the Lakers went to Abbie Christiansen, who took second place in the long jump (15’, 3/4”), about a quarter inch shy of first place, said Coach Christiansen, her father.

Other Laker girls who placed included:

• Anna Brown, fourth in the pole vault (7’6”).

• Victoria Pecak, fifth in the 60-meter dash (8.76).

• Amber Therrien, fifth in the 800-meter run (2:42) and eighth in the 1,600 (6:07).

• Dani Frost, sixth in the shot put (31’, 4”).

• Nadine Gilmer, eighth in the 800-meter run (2:48).

• The 4-by-200 meter relay team of Christiansen, Brown, Pecak and Lauren Garver took 10th (2:03.2).

Christiansen is also coaching the Laker boys’ team with help from another “Mr. C” – Tom Christensen, a retired teacher.

“Ironically, he also grew up in Greenville, at the other end of the street I lived on,” Paul Christiansen said of his assistant, who is married to Cedar native BJ (Mazurek) Christensen.

None of the Laker boys finished in the top 10 in any event.

The Glen Lake boys’ team includes seniors Will Urquhart and Mike Keim; juniors Ricky Buttrick, Joey Czapek, John Lee and Tony Weinke; sophomore D.J. Jones-Stachnik; and freshmen Mike Grumley and Zach Wendels.

The next scheduled meet for the Lakers is Wednesday, April 9 at Traverse City Central.
