American Legion group may lose charter

The Maple City American Legion Auxiliary may be losing its charter after more than 60 years in existence.

Membership is down to four members: Wanda Nothacker of Elmwood Township; Geraldine Anderson of Little Traverse Lake; Agnes Allington of Leland and Nancy Petke of Centerville Township. Allington has been a member for more than 30 years; Anderson for 45 years.

“Over the years, we’ve done many different things in the surrounding communities,” Nothacker said, adding that the national organization requires a minimum membership of 10 for a local chapter.

The group has distributed Blue Star Banners for county service men and women,
prepared and sent shoe boxes with presents around the world, prepared community meals and made contributions to food pantries.

The only membership requirement is to have a family relationship with a United States veteran, living or deceased.

“You could be a mother, wife, daughter, set-daughter, granddaughter, grandmother, great-granddaughter,” Nothacker said. “All women of Leelanau County are invited to join us.”

Auxiliary members meet for a potluck meeting the second Thursday of each month at the hall located on County Road 667. During the winter months when the hall is closed, the group meets to different members’ homes.
