Leland to host softball, baseball tourney

The Leland softball and baseball teams will host their first tournament of the season on Saturday - weather permitting.

The Bear Lake, Ellsworth and Manton softball teams will travel to Leland Saturday to compete in the Leland Invitational if the weather and field conditions cooperate. First-year head coach Joe Nedow said Tuesday Leland will play Bear Lake at 10 a.m., with Ellsworth and Manton starting around noon. The consolation game will be at 2 p.m., with the championship game expected to start around 4 p.m.

Leland will play Bear Lake at 9:30 a.m. in baseball, with Ellsworth and Manton taking the field at 11:30 a.m. The consolation game will be at 1:30 p.m. and the championship game should start around 3 p.m.

Nedow said as of Tuesday afternoon the softball field was in decent condition with most of if dry. “There is some snow melt along the third base line, but other than that the field is in good shape,” he said.

With rain forecast for every day the rest of this week, Leland athletic director Ryan Knudsen said he’s hoping for the best for both fields.

“The baseball field still has some snow in the outfield and along the third base line. I think a good rain will take care of it. We’re taking it one day at a time,” he said.

If everything works as planned, this will be the first time in two years that Leland has been able to host its baseball and softball invitational. The weather forecast for Saturday is for a chance of a rain-snow mix with highs around 42 degrees.

“We had to cancel the last two because of the weather,” Nedow said.
