Hazardous and electronic waste drop-offs slated

The Leelanau County Solid Waste Council has set two Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics recycling collections in the coming weeks, with the first slated for this Saturday, April 19, in Maple City.

The second will be held May 17 in Suttons Bay.  Reservations are required for each collection.  To register, phone the Leelanau County Planning and Community Development Department at 256-9812.

Some of the materials accepted include  antifreeze, automobile paint, oil paint, bug sprays, florescent light bulbs, pool chemicals, household batteries, televisions (no console TVs), radios, phone, medications (if all personal information is removed from bottles), and syringes/sharps/needles (if placed in a hardwall container like a laundry detergent bottle.)

The Solid Waste Council last week received preliminary authority from the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners to renew leases for the use of two of the county’s eight recycling sites – in Lake Leelanau and Northport.  The county pays property owners $150 per month for use of each of the sites.

The county board was expected to approve the two lease agreements this week following a recommendation to do so last week from the board’s executive committee.
