Leelanau County Treasurer Vicki Kilway said she has become aware of a "potential scam" facing property owners, and wants to alert the public about it.

“There have been reports of property owners receiving letters from one or more individuals stating they are interested in purchasing your property,” Kilway said.  “These individuals have made statements to the effect that they have checked the tax records and show the owner is delinquent in paying their taxes.” 

The scammers offer to purchase the property and even offer a deed for property owners to sign, notarize and return in a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

“Leelanau County has not had any such incidents reported to the county Treasurer’s office,”Kilway said, but an alert was issued to county treasurers throughout the state earlier this week. Anyone with questions or concerns can contact her at 256-9838.
