Golfers anxious to play at public courses in the county are finally getting their chance this week.
The Leelanau Club at Bahle Farms, and Sugar Loaf The Old Course (formerly Sleeping Bear Golf Club) opened for the season Wednesday. Matt Morrison, PGA golf professional at The Leelanau Club, and Chris Wakeman. general manager of the Sugar Loaf course, said the courses generally open in mid-April.
Joy Wall, owner of the Dunes Golf Club near Empire, said she hopes her course will open for the season this weekend. Chuck Olson of King’s Challenge Golf Club said the Cedar-area course will open for the season on Friday, April 25.

The Glen Lake 1 Mile Fun Run & Walk held annually in August has received an endorsement from the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports.
“We wish you success with your event and thank you for … promoting healthy lifestyles,” wrote Tricia A. Fraas of the Goverenor’s Council to race director Pete Edwards of Glen Arbor in announcing the endorsement.
This year’s Fun Run will be held Aug. 16 at Glen Lake School.

Sarah Kibbey of Maple City had a strong performance for Hope College at the Emory (Ga.) Invitational track meet earlier this month.
Hope finished fifth fin a field of 18 teams in the contest.
Kibbey competed in triple jump and the 400-meter run. Her best performance in the field event was 33 feet, 1¾ inches, and she posted a time of 1:02.59 in the 400.
Kibbey is a 2005 Glen Lake graduate and the daughter of Bob and Cindy Kibbey.
