Volunteers sought for 2 S-B Twp. boards

Suttons Bay Township is still looking for volunteers to serve in two posts related to operation of the Suttons Bay-Bingham Fire and Rescue Department.

Township treasurer Cathy Herman announced last month that she was stepping down from her additional post as a member of the Suttons Bay-Bingham Fire and Rescue Authority board.

Herman has been serving as treasurer of the fire authority board since its inception several years ago. At a fire board meeting last week, members elected Bingham Township representative Robert W. Foster as treasurer. Bingham Township resident Harry Wiberg was elected vice president, and Suttons Bay Township supervisor Rich Bahle retained his seat as president of the fire authority board. Bingham Township trustee Mary Bush is also a member of the fire authority board.

“We’re still looking for a Suttons Bay Township resident to serve as a township representative on the fire authority board,” Bahle said at the township board’s regular monthly meeting last week. “It’s a very significant commitment as Cathy Herman will attest; and we’re hoping someone will step forward.”

The Suttons Bay-Bingham Fire and Rescue Authority Board, which meets at least monthly, is charged with overseeing the budget and setting policies for the Suttons Bay-Bingham Fire and Rescue Department. One of the board’s major efforts involves a search for a new fire and rescue department chief to replace Bill Calhoun, who has announced that he intends to retire this year.

Suttons Bay Township is also looking for a volunteer to serve on a Building Authority board that was set up to monitor construction and bond payments on the new and expanded Suttons Bay-Bingham Fire and Rescue Hall on St. Mary’s Avenue at First Street in the Village of Suttons Bay. Construction was completed two years ago, so the Building Authority’s only responsibility now is to monitor bond payments. The Building Authority board generally meets once a year.

In other business at its regular monthly meeting on April 9, the Suttons Bay Township Board:

• Discussed progress on the proposed “Herman-Center Community Park” project. State grant funding to acquire a 120-acre parcel on Herman Road at Center Highway (County Road 633) will be available later this year, along with grant funding from a variety of other sources. Officials noted that a committee is also working on a plan to raise funds through private donations and will launch a fundraising campaign later this spring.

• Authorized clerk Sandra VanHuystee to sign a renewed contract with Suttons Bay Public Schools to provide recreation programs for local youths, including $600 for soccer and $600 for tee-ball.

• Adopted a resolution to submit a grant application for $55,000 to the state to help pay for creation of a joint Suttons Bay Township -Village of Suttons Bay Master Plan.

• Authorized treasurer Cathy Herman to sign a contract with Suttons Bay Public Schools to collect summer taxes for a fee of $2.50 per parcel.
