1924-2008
Services were held last week in Traverse City for lifelong Leelanau County resident Peter Louis Walters of Suttons Bay who died April 8 at Munson Medical Center. He was 83.
He was born May 2, 1924, in Suttons Bay, the son of Herman E. and Barbara (Lingaur) Walters. In November 1943 he married the former Frances Flees who preceded him in death. His wife, Patricia Walters, survives.
He served in the Army during World War II and was employed by Cone Drive as a machinist and toolmaker, retiring in 1986 after 35 years of service. He was a charter member of Cherryland VFW Post # 2780, the Knights of Columbus, and St. Francis Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Also surviving are seven daughters, Barbara Krouse, Marilyn (John) Paddock, Joan (Michael) Stevens, all of Florida, Dorothy (William) Welter of California, Ruth (Leon) Long of Interlochen, Genevieve (Ronald) Lingaur and Margaret Fisher, both of Traverse City; three sons, David (Lynn) Walters, Paul (Glenna) Walters and Ronald Walters, all of Traverse City; one sister, Leona (Howard) Kalchik; five brothers, Emil (Glenna) Walters, Bernard (Darlene) Walters, Arthur (Patricia) Walters, Patrick (Myra) Walters and Phillip (Dorothy) Walters; 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; six step-children, 21 step-grandchildren; and 23 step-great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Alfred, Donald and Firman; a sister, Otilia in infancy; and a grandson.
Interment was to be held at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
