There has been a marked increase in the number of physical assaults among students at Suttons Bay Public Schools in recent months, and school officials are being asked to act quickly to reverse the trend.

Both shoulders on M-22 will be widened between Empire and the Leelanau-Benzie county line for bicycle/pedestrian use lane. The Michigan Department of Transportation had applied for the funding for the past three years before the recent approval.

s exposed bottomland and environmental lobbyists are butting heads in the state Legislature. In Leelanau County, property along West Grand Traverse Bay is most affected as receding lake levels have opened up bottomlands along the shoreline that the state claims ownership over.

The county Equalization report places the market value of personal and real property in Leelanau County at nearly $2.8 billion.

John Naymick, chairman of the county facilities task force who also serves as Elmwood Township supervisor, authored and had approved by the Elmwood Township Board a resolution in support of moving the county seat to Lake Leelanau.

Leelanau County soon might have a cultural center located near Omena that would provide a theater, observatory and other functions to enrich the community.

The Suttons Bay Board of Education will ask voters to approve an extra-voted operational levy of 1½ mill for 1 year in the June 12 annual school election.

The total snowfall through Friday noon as measured and recorded by the County Road Commission at Suttons Bay was 169 inches, some 23 inches short of the record-setting total of 1976-77.

Four miles of Leelanau Co. Rd. 633 from Lakeview Rd. in Elmwood Township north to Donner Rd. in Bingham Township are to be reconstructed this year, according to a work schedule compiled by the County Road Commission.

The Red Cross campaign ended this week with the total of $3,000, a figure $500 short of the goal, according to Mrs. Alex Buchanan of Glen Lake, fund chairman.

William H. Nash, a native of Leelanau County now living in Traverse City, was announced yesterday as the winner of a contest to name route M-22 from Manistee to Traverse City. “Manitou Trail" was the name chosen, and the prize is $10.

The Elsenheimer shingle mill started up Tuesday and is running full blast, Will Safford will be sawyer in the mill this season.

W.W. Smith, of Glen Arbor, arrived in town yesterday and has commenced work on the new shingle mill.

There will be a grand musical and dramatical entertainment by the pupils and young ladies of St. Mary’s Provemont, May 7th and 8th. Admission 25¢. Commences at 2:30 o’clock. Supper will be served at 6:00 o’clock. Tickets 25¢.
