Kids get crack at trout in Northport

Temperatures are expected to cool a bit, but Dave Korson doesn't expect a rowboat will be required to get to the schools of rainbow trout being planted this week in the Northport millpond.

The rowboat was needed about a dozen years ago not to get within casting distance of the trout, but to crack open winter’s remaining ice.

“Oh well, at least they aren’t calling for snow,” said Korson, who has been involved in one way or another with the Scott Brow memorial kids’ fishing tournament for most of his life.

The tournament will be held Saturday, the traditional opener for inland trout season. The Northport Sportsman’s Club has ordered up 450 rainbow trout that are being planted in the millpond for the benefit of young anglers, who will be found along the millpond’s shoreline starting at first light — or even earlier.

It will be a place for bobbers and worms, along with the smiles of hundreds of youngsters. Many will catch their first fish.

Korson, a lead organizer of the event, will join many volunteers. Prizes donated by area business will be awarded to the kids.

“It’s fun. And we get lots of help. The kids enjoy it., so we keep doing it,” said Korson.

The tournament was named after a young Northport resident who loved to fish before losing his life in a car accident years ago.
