Saturday will be "Junior Ranger Day" at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Special activities for children of all ages will begin at 10 a.m. and culminate in a badge and swearing-in ceremony at 3 p.m.
To earn a Junior Ranger badge, young prospects will need to go on at least one ranger-led program in the morning or afternoon and complete a few activities in a Junior Ranger booklet that will be available in the park Visitor Center in Empire all day.
The Junior Ranger booklet will available free of charge beginning at 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Adults must accompany children at all times. Visitors to the National Lakeshore must display an entrance pass on their vehicle. Passes may be purchased at the Visitor Center and various other locations within the park at $10 per vehicle for seven days or $20 per vehicle for an entire year.
Events Saturday include a 10 a.m. “Dune Discovery Walk,” with participants meeting at the base of the Dune Climb on M-109 two miles north of Empire. Junior Ranger booklets will be provided at that location. At 1 p.m., a “Critter Discovery Walk” will be organized at the Visitor Center, followed by a car caravan to a trailhead south of Empire. At 3 p.m., the “Junior Ranger Ceremony” will be held at the Visitor Center. There will be light refreshments and prizes for all.
