Norse teams 2nd at Onekama

The Suttons Bay boys' and girls' track teams each finished second in the 10-team Onekama Frostbite Invitational Friday.

Breanna Korson won the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 2:27; 5:46 and 12:25, respectively, and anchored the winning 4-by-400-meter relay team that included Sarah Simpkins, Caleigh Lennerth and Taylor Jolliffe (4:37).

“Our teams ran very well but Manton was just too strong,” coach Mark Smith said. “Manton boys placed in the top three in 16 of the 17 events. Their girls had 54 points after the field events compared to our 7 and we just could not make up the difference.”

The Manton girls team wracked up 147.5 points, compared to Suttons Bay’s 106.5
Lennerth finished fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.83) and second in the 300 hurdles behind Alyssa Korson (51.18). Alyssa also finished third in the 200 (28.75) and was on the 400 relay team with Simpkins, Erin Sneed and Kyra Shively, which finished second.

Shively was second in the 100 (14.13).

Suttons Bay’s 800 relay team of Simpkins, Alyssa Korson, Jolliffe and Shively finished fourth in 1:59.44. Jolliffe added a fourth-place high jump medal to her two relays with a jump of 4’8”. Sneed also finished second in the 400 (1:04.19) Angela Patterson finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 80’1” and Rory Price finished fifth in the 3200 with a time of 13:53.

The Norsemen boys with 115 points were second only to Manton ,which had 156.
Ben Wynsma won the 800 and 1600-meter runs with times of 2:07.85 and 4:43.6, respectively. In the 3200, he finished secondnd in the 3200 (10:27). Meanwhile, Travis Smith ran the 3200 in 11:27, good enough for a 6th place finish.

In the shorter runs, Nick Porritt (11.85) and Eric Hernanadez (11.87) finished 1-2 in the 100. They also finished 1-3 in the 200 with times of 24.62 and 24.91, respectively. In addition, they teamed with Damien Garces and Nalen Brockman to place second in the 400 relay (47.61) and second in the 800 relay (1:40.45). The 3200-meter relay team of Tom Pritz, Josh Ackerman, Chris Schneider and Juan Reyes finished fifth in 9:23. Jesse Bunker was fourthth in the 110 hurdles (18.64) and 3rd in the 300 hurdles (47.65).

In field events, Brockman also got second in the high jump with a leap of 5’11”. Dwuan Anderson had a high jump of 5’7” and a long jump of 17’ 2.5” to get a pair of fifth-place medals. Collin Gaudard vaulted 11 feet for a third place and Josh Ackerman was sixth with a vault of 9’6”.

Sophomore Sam Send finished third in the long jump with an effort of 18 ’4.5”.
The Norse began a busy schedule for the coming week by traveling to Mesick Wednesday for a three-team meet with the Bulldogs and Glen Lake. On Friday Suttons Bay was scheduled to travel to Mason County Central for the Optimist Invitation and to Benzie Tuesday for a three-way competition with the Huskies and Buckley.
