Building still sluggish, year-to-date figures show

Building activity in Leelanau County is still sluggish compared to 2005 and 2006, but is greater than it was by this time in 2007.

During the latest two-week reporting period, the Leelanau County Construction Code Authority issued eight new building permits with a total estimated value of $756,827. During the same two-week period in 2007, only three new permits were issued, valued at $19,000.

Residents and contractors alike may recall that the weather was downright nasty during mid-April, 2007, compared to mostly pleasant weather during the same period this year.

The latest building permits added to a file available for public review at the Code Authority office brings the year-to-date total number of permits to 68, and total estimated values to $5,979,830. That’s nearly 12-percent more permits issued than by the same time in 2007, and nearly 22-percent greater year-to-date estimated values than last year.

It’s important to remember, though, that between 2007 and 2006, the value of permits went down 35 percent and the number of permits issued plummeted by 45 percent This year’s numbers so far haven’t achieved levels seen by the same time in 2005 or 2006.

Following is a list of projects for which permits have been issued, listed by the community in which the work is being done:
