It’s one of journalism’s oldest traditions: leading a newspaper with its distinctive “flag” or nameplate. And for the first time in more than 50 years, the flag of the “Enterprise” is changing. We have revamped and simplified our nameplate, which appears at the top of each week’s front page.

State budget cuts could eliminate regulations for waste fields and haulers, as well as sanitary regulations governing campgrounds, public swimming pools and mobile home parks. The move would cut $1.1 million from the state budget, but some fear a greater cost to public health.

Officials of the Village of Suttons Bay may reconsider their decision last month to ignore the plight of some 35 boat owners who use “unauthorized” mooring buoys in Suttons Bay south of the village’s coal dock. The state DEQ has stated it would stringently enforce bottomlands rules.

The National Park Service was reported this week to be negotiating to buy property in a proposed “scenic corridor” near Glen Lake, but a hearing on the owner’s request for a zoning change to permit residential building still was scheduled for May 9 before the Glen Arbor Township Planning and Zoning Commission.

Kay Leighton of Northport High School set an unofficial Class D state record Monday when she high-jumped 5 feet 8 inches in a girls’ track meet at Elk Rapids.

Liability insurance to cover Leelanau County’s operation of the Leland Dam has been canceled, the insurer informed the County Board of Commissioners Friday.

Leelanau County is seeking to greatly increase the taxation value of land after years of token boosts in valuations, during which time the county has slipped further and further into the red. County officials report now that there is not enough money in the general fund to meet current bills, and that there will be only a little more than enough during the remainder of the year to meet salaries.

The board of supervisors will decide in a special public meeting May 4, the next step in planning another election for the convalescent hospital bonding issue.
* * *
Leelanau County will have nearly a half million more pine trees by the end of this month as a result of plantings by co-operators of the Leelanau Soil Conservation district, according to Ed Plamondon, district director in charge of tree distribution.
