Laker girls edge Benzie, gain split

Glen Lake,s softball team split a doubleheader at Benzie Central Tuesday night to remain at .500 in Northwest Conference play.

The Lakers lost the first game, 7-4, and won the second, 3-2. In the first game, Kristen Pleva had 2 hits and scored 2 runs and Katie Drzewiecki had an RBI to lead the Glen Lake attack. Pitcher Cori Kahler notched 3 strikeouts.

The score was tied 2-all in the second game going in the bottom of the sixth inning when Amanda Lautner hit a single to drive in O’Brien for the game-winning score. O’Brien had 2 hits and Lautner had a RBI for the Lakers. Kahler again had 3 strikeouts. The split left Glen Lake with a 3-3 Northwest record.

Last Wednesday, Glen Lake hosted St. Mary with the Eagles winning the first game, 4-2, and the Lakers taking the nightcap, 8-2.

Susan Herman threw 9 strikeouts and allowed 2 hits in the opener for St. Mary. Emily Schaub had 2 singles to lead the Eagles’ offense, with Bradi Pasch, Anne Kuznicki and Missy Nelson each getting a hit.

For Glen Lake, O’Brien had 2 RBI and Pleva had 2 runs and 2 stolen bases.

In the second game, winning pitcher O’Brien had 4 strikeouts and allowed 5 hits, with Kahler coming in for the save in the sixth inning. Drzewiecki and O’Brien each had 2 hits and 2 RBI; Rachelle Brzezinski had 2 RBI; and Pleva scored 3 runs for Glen Lake.

Herman threw 9 strikeouts but allowed 8 hits from the mound for St. Mary. Allison Korson and Kuznicki each doubled for St. Mary with Schaub, Pasch, Mary Lingaur and Nelson hitting singles.

St. Mary split at the St. Francis Invitational on Saturday, losing to Cadillac 5-1 in the first game, but taking Rudyard 15-0 in the consolation. Herman threw 12 strikeouts against the Vikings but allowed 10 hits.

Coach Ed Merica said Allison Korson, Pasch, Lingaur, Herman and Kuznicki all singled. Against Rudyard, Herman allowed no hits and threw 7 strikeouts. Emily Schaub had 2 doubles and Ashley Herman 2 singles in the winning effort.

The Suttons Bay team is searching for its first win after losing at home to Frankfort Tuesday, 17-0 and 19-1. Kelly Ruthkowski and Elaina Leaureaux each singled in the first game. Katie Dupree belted a double to score Christa Nesky for the Norsemen’s lone tally for the day. Rita Vanover and Nesky both ha a single as well.

On Friday, host Norse lost to Elk Rapids, 10-0, 4-0. Taylor Mentzer had a single in the first game and Laureen Schmidt had a single and a double in the second. Against Lake City on Thursday, Suttons Bay lost 4-0, 12-4. Nesky had 2 singles; Schmidt had a single and a double; and Rebecca Reyhl had a single in the first game. The score was tied 4-4 in the nightcap when the Lakers scored six runs in the third and scored one each in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win. Nesky had 2 singles, and Ruthkowski and Dupree each had an RBI.

Leland hosted Buckley Tuesday and lost 11-6, 10-4. Molly Harris and Kaleigh Stinson both had 3 hits, and Haley VerSnyder, Dena Popp, Rhiannon Hildenbrandt and Kaylah Mendoza had 2 hits each in the first game. Hildenbrandt had 2 hits in the second game.

Against Bear Lake Friday, Leland won the second game, 19-4. VerSnyder threw five strikeouts in her first win of the season. Stinson had 2 hits, 3 RBI; Popp had 2 doubles, 3 RBI; Hildenbrandt had 2 doubles; and Sierra Parrent had 2 singles.

Leland will play at Mesick Friday, then host Benzie Tuesday. Glen Lake will host Kingsley Friday, play at the Ellsworth Tournament Saturday, then host Mesick Tuesday. St. Mary will host T-C Central JV Friday and will play at the Elk Rapids Tournament Saturday. Suttons Bay will play at Charlevoix tonight, at the Manton Tournament Saturday, and will play at Buckley on Tuesday.
