New York businessman and longtime Leland summer resident George McFadden was killed last week in a plane crash near the Texas-Louisiana border.
McFadden, 67, was a passenger in a single-engine Cirrus SR22 that was en route from Tupelo, Miss., to Houston at the time of the crash on Tuesday, April 22.
Published reports indicate the cause of the crash appears to be carbon monoxide poisoning. Air traffic controllers had been trying without success to make radio contact with the plane for more than an hour prior to the accident. In addition, the plane traveled in a straight line consistently at an altitude of 10,000 feet during the hour before the crash.
McFadden’s family has owned a home in the Indiana Woods community of Leland for generations. His sister is Mary McFadden, a nationally recognized fashion designer.
