As the weather goes, so goes the Glen Lake girls' track team.
The girls’ squad posted a number of season and personal bests in an April 23 meet, but was third in a quadrangular meet Tuesday that started a little early due to the chilly temperatures.
“We even moved up the start a half hour to avoid the dropping temperatures later,” Laker coach Paul Christiansen said. “We keep waiting for spring to come.”
Glen Lake came in third in a field of four girls’ teams competing Tuesday in Kingsley. The host Stags won with 98 points, with Mesick second at 55 and Glen Lake third at 51.
Posting first-place finishes for the squad was junior Lauren Garver, a first-year transfer student from Pinckney. She ran the 100 and 200 in 13.81 and 29.51, respectively.
Distance runner Amber Therrien won the 1600 in 5:55 and was second in the 800 (2:41.5).
Dani Frost had a second in shot put (31’9”) and fourth in discus (86’5”). In other field events, Anna Brown posted a third in pole vault (6’6”) and teammate Abbie Christiansen was also third in long jump (13’9”).
Finishing fourth were Christiansen in the 100 (14.2) and Bonnie Ricord in the 1600 (6:15). Victoria Pecak and Nadine Gilmer picked up fifth-place finishes in the 00 (14.22) and 800 (2:50.3), respectively.
The Laker relay teams picked up a first and two third-place wins at Kingsley. Pecak, Garver, Christiansen and sophomore Melissa Schopieray were the winners of the 400 relay in 56.5.
A core group of Pecak, Garver, Christiansen and Anna Brown placed thirrd in the 800 (2:01.6). And in the 3200, Therrien, Gilmer, Ricord and Whitney Weber were also third.
Lakers’ Mike Keim, Tony Weinke and John Lee were Glen Lake’s top male competitors Tuesday. Keim, a distance runner, was second and third in the 1600 and 800, respectively. Weinke was third in the pole vault (8’6”) and Lee was fourth in long jump (17’91/2”).
“Our boys have been improving a lot,” Christiansen said.
In contrast to this week with temperatures in the 40s, Glen Lake’s girls’ team had their “fastest times of the year” last Wednesday when the temperature hovered around 70. Glen Lake had 67 points, Mesick tallied 541/2 and Suttons Bay 371/2.
Frost posted career bests in both of her field events. The sophomore’s 33-foot 41/2-inch shot put throw was more than five feet longer than the next competitor, who was also from Glen Lake. Frost took the discus event with a throw of 89’9” while Christiansen was first in long jump with a 14-foot, 73/4-inch effort.
Other firsts for the Lakers were: Garver in the 100 (13.88) and 200 (28.96), respectively, and Therrien in the 1600 (6:00.31) and 3200 (13:27.93).
Trish Lootens was second in shot (28’21/4”) and Gilmer posted a second and fourth in the 800 (2:46.5) and 1600 (6:13.9), respectively.
Ricord was third in the 1600 (6:08.1) and 800 (2:48.7).
Running the 300-meter hurdles for the first time, Kelsey Caswell was third in 1:01.4.
Glen Lake’s 3200-meter relay team of Therrien, Gilmer, Ricord and Weber was first in 11:11.2. The 400 and 800-meter relay teams earned second place wins. Members included Christiansen, Pecak and Garver along with Brown (in the 400) and Melissa Schopieray (in the 800).
Firsts for the boys at Mesick belonged to Keim in the 800. He was also second in the 1600 (2:29.5). Lee was second in the long jump (17’51/2”) and in the 300 hurdles which he ran for the first time.
Mike Grumley was fourth in the 100 (12.4) and Weinke was fourth in long jump (16’11/2”).
The Lakers travel to Traverse City Friday for the Ken Bell Invitational and are off until next Thursday when they travel to Suttons Bay for the Garland Invitational.
