Young equestrians earn honors

Young equestrians who train at Northern Pines Farm in Maple City earned multiple blue ribbons and other honors at the Winter Equestrian Festival held recently at the Palm Beach Polo and Equestrian Club in Wellington, Fla.

One of the highlights included Morgan Kennedy, 18, who rode “Zaboomerang” to a win in the $2,500 High Amateur Owner Jumper class. Kennedy earned the top prize by navigating a course of 15 jumps set at 4-foot, 6 inches with the fastest time and without causing a jump to fall.

A 2007 graduate of The Leelanau School, Kennedy is the daughter of Michael and Barbara Kennedy of Petoskey. She has been riding and training under the direction of owner/trainer Melissa Hirt at Northern Pines Farm since she was 11.

Leelanau School junior Alissa Norris competed in the Children’s Hunter division – where horses are scored on their movement, manner and jumping form – aboard “Lanshark.” Norris collected multiple ribbons including a fourth place in the Under Saddle class and a sixth place in Over Fences. Norris, 16, is the daughter of Jim and Jan Norris of Lake Leelanau and Lexington, Ky.

Also competing in Wellington was Rachel Reid with her horse “Blossom” in both the Children’s Jumper Division and the Junior Jumper Division. Reid placed seventh out of 76 in the $10,000 Junior Jumper Classic, where riders under 18 compete on a course of jumps set at 4-foot, 3 inches in height.
