Action to approve a handful of administrative directives was taken last week by the Leland Board of Education.
Board members on April 21 approved everything from the senior trip to Mackinac Island next month to a tax collection agreement with Suttons Bay Township during the meeting.
Leland’s Class of 2008 will leave for Mackinac Island June 3 and return June 5. Overnight stays by students must be approved in advance according to board policy, Superintendent Michael Hartigan said.
Also, Suttons Bay Township Treasurer Cathy Herman has agreed to collect property taxes for the school this summer at a rate of $2.50 per parcel. It is a negotiated fee suggested by Hartigan.
In other business, the board:
• Adopted a revised retirement plan document and authorized Hartigan and business manager Sandra Potts to administer the plan in keeping with new federal guidelines.
• Accepted a state $71,400 for school readiness that will be used for student scholarships and parent education at the Leelanau Children’s Center. Leland acts as a “conduit” for the preschool program which is administered by the center.
•Agreed to continue cooperative sports agreements with Glen Lake for skiing and Lake Leelanau St. Mary for middle school soccer and girls volleyball.
• Agreed to opt-out of the state’s School of Choice policy and use the guidelines established through the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District.
